festival showcases the work of a few talented artists who have their creative practice rooted in the Downtown Eastside [DTES].
Vancouver, BC – Emerge Festival the new name for the annual celebration of Downtown Eastside (DTES) Small Arts Grants Recipients announces its 8th edition, taking place May 18 to June 16, 2018 at
Gallery Gachet,
SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, and
Vancouver Public Library: nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Branch.
45 artists from the DTES will reveal their new work for a three day celebration of emerging, local creators. The Group Art Exhibition, Screenings, Songs, and Spoken Words, and Writers Read events bring together visual artists, musicians, singers, filmmakers and performance artists whose creative practice is connected to life on the DTES. Surprising, delightful and thought provoking experiences are in store.
“Partnering with Vancouver Foundation on the Downtown Eastside Small Arts Grant Program is not only exciting but so rewarding to the community as a whole.” says Sharon Belli, Director of Carnegie Community Centre.
“To have an initiative set up that demonstrates the potential for social impact investment in the arts is enormous. This program provides direct financial support to DTES neighbourhood artists with ambitions to grow, achieve and further their art. At the Carnegie Community Centre, we believe the arts play an essential role in our everyday lives, our cultural identity and our economy - they inspire, challenge and educate us. As part of the DTES arts and cultural sector, the Carnegie Centre is pleased to support and showcase the many multi-talented neighbourhood artists that have received small arts grants.”
“We believe in addressing inequity in the arts by helping to remove social or economic barriers for new artists to develop their work,” states Kevin McCort, President and CEO of Vancouver Foundation.
“That’s why Vancouver Foundation is proud to partner with the Carnegie Community Centre to provide small grants to artists that have fewer opportunities to enhance their skills and increase the visibility of their artwork. The Emerge Festival is an exciting opportunity for them to share their new artwork with the community that inspires it, and we can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with this year.”
The DTES Small Arts Grants Emerge Festival is proud to partner with co-presenters to share this work with Vancouver. In 2018, Emerge Festival is honoured to collaborate with SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs & Partnerships, Vancouver Public Library : nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona Branch, and Gallery Gachet.

About Emerge Festival
Emerge Festival, the annual celebration of DTES Small Arts Grants recipients represents an exciting initiative, first undertaken by Vancouver Foundation and Carnegie Community Centre eight years ago. The 2018 Group Art Exhibition, Performances, Readings, and Cultural Sharing highlight the work of a few talented artists who have their creative practice rooted in the Downtown Eastside [DTES]. This annual event is an opportunity to shine a light on DTES artists, their practices, and ideas. The DTES Small Arts Grants Program is built on the unwavering belief that DTES Artists have a commitment to their craft that is sustained across their work, and that effort deserves support.
