SaZ-C (SaRah MaRgueRiTe ChesTeRman) is a Vancouver-born and raised community activist, writer, artist and photographer. Growing up in the city, her deep roots in the local landscape were shaped early on during her time at Southlands Elementary School, where she learned alongside and formed lasting bonds with members of the Musqueam Nation. This initial connection instilled a lifelong respect for Indigenous independence and community-led storytelling. Today, as a resident artist SaZ uses her camera and her pen as tools of resistance and solidarity. UNCURATeD is a culmination of her lived experience on these streets — a deliberate, protective effort to honour the neighbourhood’s collective creative pulse.

I am grateful for the generosity of the DTES Small Arts Grant, which provided the impetus to make this project a reality. UNCURATeD will be my first published book.
Invaluable aid for artists of all disciplines to actualize their ideas, the benefits of which increase the worth of these gifts by more than meets the eye.
These grants are a real boon, not only for the hood’s diversity of artists but for DTES as a whole – a pivotal force, from raising community morale to discovering its I.D. as a hotbed of creativity: proof of the uplifting POWER OF ART..
