Jim Sands has been involved in the Downtown Eastside community since 1980 when he became involved with Vancouver Cooperative Radio. During the 1980s Jim was part of The Talking Freds, a duo that performed satirical songs at demonstrations and benefits. Starting in 2003 Jim took part in In the Heart of a City: The Downtown Eastside Community Play and several subsequent projects (Shadow Project, DTES Romeo and Juliet, We the People). He recently toured across Canada on the Fringe Festival circuit with a one-man storytelling show, CHARLIE: A Hockey Story, Jim has been called “a gregarious and engaging storyteller” by the Calgary Herald and his show has been described as “one of the best storytelling shows I’ve ever seen” (The Craig, Victoria). Jim is using his DTES grant to expand his repertoire in the area of clowning.
