Annemarie van Dijk
Received grant in 2024
Annemarie van Dijk (she/her) is a writer and beginning multidisciplinary artist from the Netherlands. Since moving to the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations in 2023, she has started immersing herself in creating art. She sees her practice as a healing mechanism and a way to learn and explore her new surroundings. Her art represents her love for nature, wildlife, decolonization and the practices she has learned from the Indigenous communities, mostly in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Her artforms include painting, writing, wood carving and beading. Annemarie appreciates funding received from the 2024 DTES Small Arts Grants Program and Vancouver Foundation.
How has receiving a DTES Small Arts Grant supported your development as an artist?
The DTES Arts Grant was very helpful to me. Having moved to the Netherlands, I didn’t have any art supplies here. The grant allowed me to get supplies and to also immerse myself in new local Indigenous art forms, such as drum making and beading. The grant and the workshops and events related to the grant helped me to take myself more serious as an artist, which has led to new opportunities for me. I am very grateful to have received this grant.
