During his youth, Alex used to watch a group of old men carving in his hometown. He began work on his first totem pole after one these men taught him the techniques of carving. He later moved to Ksan village (near Hazelton) where he furthered his carving skills. Alex will use his Small Arts Grants to purchase materials needed to carve five Haida masks, three native pendants and two native paddles.
