Louise has been a resident of Strathcona for a long time, and she was inspired to use photography to capture the uniqueness of her neighborhood. Her photographs feature old houses transformed and gardens, once used for growing food, now landscaped for beauty.

Brenda

Dallaway

Through a series of paintings, Brenda illustrates the birds of the Downtown Eastside. She will use her Small Arts Grant to develop a website, which includes professional photos of her work and a scanner to upload her work.

Colleen

Carroll

Through art and speaking engagements, Colleen strives to show the rest of the province what makes her community - Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside - so beautiful. A Small Arts Grant meant she could use real canvas for her acrylic paintings rather than masonite board.

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is a hotbed of artistic activity. But many artists in this neighbourhood lack the financial means to take their work to the next level. Vancouver Foundation created the Small Arts Grants Program, in partnership with the Carnegie Community Centre, to give DTES artists the opportunity to advance their careers by expanding their portfolios and showcasing their work.
